About Me

My name is Julie Spencer and I am, The Glass Lady.

In 1985, I completed a 4 year bachelor degree in Ceramic Design at Monash University majoring in "flat glass" under the tutelage of renowned stained glass artist Klaus Zimmer.

After finishing this degree in November, I was now looking to make some money in my chosen field. I ran an ad in a local paper, advertising hobby classes in Leadlighting and copper foiling. Slowly but surely people replied and before long I had about 10 students. The Glass Lady business had begun. Although be it very humble beginnings from the garage of my mothers house.

A couple of years went by and I decided to move my stained glass and leadlighting classes to my own home for convenience, as I now was married and had 3 small children. Again the classes were held in my garage or "tin shed" as I called it. Classes continued to grow and I now had approximately 17 students.

In 1988, sadly, my mother had developed a cancerous melanoma which at that time signalled a death sentence. I continued to run my classes when I could, but my mothers health and my family's welfare remained my priority.

My mother passed away in 1999. Due to her kindness of an inheritance, I was able to open a retail shop in Dandenong west.

The shop, although in very poor condition internally, took on a whole new life with a couple coats of paint and some TLC. I opened in late November 2000. The classes took off and my need to open a website to support my business became clear.

15 years on, after a long and happy stay, an add appeared on Facebook wanting an experienced leadlighter with Feature Doors and Windows. Who could refuse thinking about a job that’s only 5 minutes away from home 😊

So this is my brief history about how 'The Glass Lady' came to be.
